Why Voting Matters
Beacon emphasizes that voting is the cornerstone of democracy, providing individuals with the power to shape their government and address pressing societal issues. According to Franklin (2020), voter participation serves as a direct means for citizens to influence policies and is a reflection of a healthy democratic society. However, participation often varies among demographic groups, with younger voters being less engaged (Pew Research Center, 2018). For example, Ira, a respondent from Beacon’s study, expressed the importance of voting for candidates with integrity and competence. She highlighted that governance affects daily life, referencing inefficiencies in online enrollment systems as a result of poor leadership.

Beacon’s research also stresses the importance of being an informed voter. Achen and Bartels (2016) highlight the significant difference between informed voters, who make choices based on credible research, and uninformed voters. who might rely on superficial factors. Social media adds complexity to this, acting as both a platform for mobilization and a source of misinformation (Guess, Nyhan, & Reiffer, 2020). Ira’s belief in carefully evaluating candidates aligns with the need to navigate a digital age filled with competing narratives and misleading information.

Ultimately, BEACON views voting as both a right and a responsibility. It’s a chance to confront systemic challenges and shape a future that reflects collective aspirations. Malafaia et al. (2021) argue that fostering youth engagement through education and meaningful discourse is crucial to enhancing participation and representation. Whether it’s a first-time voter or a seasoned participant, each vote strengthens democracy.

For Beacon, the message is clear: voting isn’t just about fulfilling a civic duty- it’s about making a difference.
