Why your Voice Matters
Voting may not seem like the funniest thing on your to do list, but it should definitely be on the top. It provides people with the power to elect their leaders, influence policies and overall shape the future of their communities and countries. Yet a survey by Beacon had found that approximately 40% of their respondents are not even registered voters. Understanding the importance of voting and its impact on society can help motivate more people to take action and participate.

Elections are one of the most important events people should pay attention to and while national elections take the most attention everywhere and, on the news, local elections have an equally, if not greater, impact on our daily lives. Whether it is for school where you’re voting for your class president or the national elections, your vote contributes to this collective count that ultimately changes the outcome of the election. Decisions about your community’s school, transportation and other related issues are addressed here, making it undoubtedly important to participate in. It may seem like a cliche thing to say but every vote matters. While it may feel like one vote among billions doesn’t make a difference, when combined with the votes of others, it becomes a powerful force, and what better way to start. Voting also ensures that your needs are represented, if not everyone votes, the policies or programs implemented may not fully represent everyone’s interests.
A democracy cannot function properly without political involvement because it denies citizens the right to voice their opinions, defend their interests, and demand transparency from their elected representatives (Dalton, 2017). Voting is not just a right, it is a responsibility we have as citizens of a country or community. It is a simple yet powerful way to make your voice heard and ensure a better future for yourself, those around you and your country.
